Shared Hosting Recommendations for Moodle Start Ups

If you are starting your Moodle as an individual, then best place to start is shared hosting for a low start-up cost and growth as demand increases. Mentioned are some of hosting companies that I have used (Some are still being used) to install and use Moodle on and will be telling you pros and cons of each. Almost all of mentioned hosting providers offer two different types of shared accounts (Standard and Professional/Business), where I have tested Moodle installation on Standard accounts just to see if their basic level hosting can deliver, but I would definitely recommend going for their upgraded (Business/Pro) shared packages as they come with twice the resource allocation.
I have mentioned the extra powered packages with every hosting (where applicable) for you to consider that as well. Though these hosting providers are mentioned for Moodle only, but can as well be used for other CMS hosting, where I have recommended Pro/Enterprise/Business packages for Moodle installation, if considering for other CMS's, you can go with standard packages as well.

Ideally, you will be running only one Moodle instance (a production environment) on one shared hosting account, with one test Moodle account. As per standard of hosting companies in shared accounts, the maximum limit of tables in databases they allocate is 1000, whilst one Moodle installation takes around 300+ tables, so installing 2 or even three Moodle instances will not normally jeopardise your hosting account. The PRO/Business/Enterprise hosting offered by some hosts does offer creating up to 3000 database tables, meaning three times the resource limits as compared to standard shared hosting account.

1: CrocWeb

A small Canadian based hosting company, with high recommendations in webhostingtalk forum, I thought of giving them a try for there was half price offer going around that time, additionally with plenty of users on the forum having good things to say about them, it's been nearly 3 years with them, and the were consistent in their up-time promise of 99%+, their IOPS is higher (5Mbps) than of industry standard 1 Mbps You can visit CrocWeb by clicking HERE.

Things I Love

  • LiteSpeed Web Servers.
  • SSD based drive servers
  • Unlimited Bandwidth.
  • No limitation of file sizes.
  • Very Good Up-time 99.9% as promised.
  • Customisation in PHP to some extent

2: Contabo

A Germany based hosting provider, I came to know about Contabo from Moodle community forum member, where I was assisting someone moving from VPS to a larger dedicated server, where I helped them out telling them the ideal hardware configuration they should  go for meanwhile asking them which hosting provider can do that level of customisation, they pointed me to Contabo, at first glance their prices were very low as compared to industry that left me thinking of service quality and that was assured to me by their user for over a year confirming they never had any issues, besides I actually monitored few random sites hosted on their servers and nearly one year of monitoring showed 100% uptime with low ping timings.
They offer hosting packages from as low as shared (ideal for new starters), to VPS all the way up to dedicated  servers, making them considering worth while for you do not have to keep looking for further hosts as your moodle grows beyond shared or VPS.
I do not have any affiliate link with Contabo, for their services are worth mentioning, so I am including them in my recommendations. You can find more about Contabo HERE.

Things I like about them

  • Just have a look at their prices, and you wont find the reason not to like them.
  • Dedicated servers are  highly customisable (in terms of drive configuration).
  • Upgrade paths, from multiple shared hosting accounts to a massively powerful dedicated server clusters.
  • They can even bring in hardware on customer's demand, that they usually do not offer, making them highly customer foused company.

3: BlueHost Cloud

Recently BlueHost have started offering their cloud services surpassing the industry's offerings of cloud services in terms of prices and hardware offered. I had used BlueHost's standard shared hosting for deploying Moodle as when I was using Moodle for teaching at university level and they never failed, plenty of forum members on site are making use of BlueHost's either shared or VPS servers without any issues reported so far. It was only at my time of their usage they were only offering one type of shared hosting accounts that I had to move out for limitations on shared hosting, later they started offering Pro hosting, VPS and Dedicated and recently they have offered Cloud hosting services with packages starting from $5.95 for a 2 CPU and 2GB RAM which is twice more than normal resource allocation of shared hosting accounts with additional benefits of replication and high up time.
One can start with their smallest package and upgrade as when required from either the pre-defined packages or choose to allocate either of the CPU or RAM individually.

Things I love

Cloud Hosting, Competitive Prices, Anytime Money back guarantee, high up time and replication of site in 3 places being a cloud service & Anytime upgrade.

Things that could have made them even better

So far there isn't anything I can think of making them better as Cloud Sites is their latest offerings and already is bringing loads to the table.

4: TMD Hosting Cloud

Just like BlueHost, they have same package with 6GB RAM and 6 Cores CPU, but at even lower cost and on SSD drives, making it much more attractive package comparatively, I have not personally tried TMD myself but have heard good reviews about them to include them in my list. Only down side comparing TMD to BlueHost is missing Dedicated IP address.

Final Words

While I have mentioned recommended hosts based on my experiences over the years particularly for Moodle installation, why not I mention some of the "Stay Away" hosts I have bad experience with as well, that would be GigaPros (Moodle installation didn't even worked with them, tried Automated install, Manual install and as well their staff tried to assist and still never could get install) and another not recommended host would be TurnKey Internet as through they have good up-time and powerful servers, Moodle installation went fine as well, but their account resource allocation is so low that it will not let you serve more than 12 visitors a day, and they will recommend you to upgrade to higher packages.

With a recommended host list mentioned, this is by no means a complete or final list, as these hosting providers are chosen from a long list of many other hosting providers I have experienced and these few came up to the mark of being recommended for starting up a Moodle site on shared hosting while being as economical as possible. If you have experienced a satisfying performance with a shared host on Moodle, do add in comments so it can help someone starting out on Moodle. Out of these mentioned above as 4 tested and verified hosting providers.
